Day One
Embark 'Marco Polo' for our afternoon sailing from Tilbury, and enjoy your first evening aboard.
Day Two
Today is spent at sea, before an evening arrival in Brunsbuttel, western gateway to the famous Kiel Canal, which connects the North Sea with the Baltic, and which has become the world's busiest artificial waterway, saving over 250 miles' sailing.
Day Three
This morning 'Marco Polo' arrives in the Baltic port of Warnemunde, gateway to the city of Rostock. Seat of northern Europe's oldest university, Rostock retains much of its medieval charm in the gabled houses and preserved warehouses surrounding Neuer Markt, the city's main square.
However, for many the main attraction of this stop will be our optional excursion to Berlin. Rapidly re-emerging as one of the world's great cities, Berlin is an unforgettable place. Stroll from the arch of the Brandenburg Gate down Unter den Linden to explore the former East German sector; browse the shops on the 'Ku'damm'; and take in the various remnants of 20th Century conflict - from Hitler's Bunker to Checkpoint Charlie and the rebuilt Potsdamer Platz.
Day Four
Today is spent at sea, enjoying 'Marco Polo"s onboard comforts and (hopefully!) the clear light and clean air for which Baltic Sea cruising is renowned.
Day Five
Almost impossibly beautiful, the Estonian capital Tallinn, with its enchanting and virtually pristine Old Town, is one of Europe's most scenic cities. Discover this timeless gem, with its winding cobbled streets of storybook houses, spectacular steepled churches, ancient buildings and Toompea Castle.
Days Six and Seven
'Marco Polo' will spend two days at the docks of St Petersburg, one of the world's most startling, shimmering, glorious cities, with its incomparable Hermitage Museum, its wide canal-side boulevards and its modern 'European' atmosphere.
We'll have lots of time in the city, so don't miss our excursion to the Tsars' Summer Palace at Petrodvorets, the chance to explore the city's Haymarket, so redolent with scenes from Dostoyevsky's novels, or the opportunity to gaze in awe at the opulence of the Marinsky Theatre, home to the world renowned Kirov Ballet.
Day Eight
This morning's destination is the wonderful port of Helsinki, where the City Hall overlooks the fresh fish stalls and historic, covered Market Hall in Market Square. Stroll through Esplanade Park, and take in the panoramic views of the city and the sea beyond from the cathedral tower before we set sail once more in the afternoon.
Day Nine
Be on deck early this morning as 'Marco Polo' passes the myriad islands surrounding the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The city itself is built across 14 such islets, and is best explored on foot. One third water, one third city and one third green landscape, Stockholm offers a wonderful mix of historic sights, labyrinthine cobbled streets and fine parks.
Day 10
The day is spent at sea, hopefully bathed in early autumn sunshine.
Day 11
'Marco Polo' docks this morning in the Danish port of Kalundborg. Head ashore to explore the town, or join an optional excursion to "wonderful, wonderful" Copenhagen, one of Europe's most stylish cities. Stroll its famous shopping street, Stroget, and take in the famous sights, including of course the fabled bronze statuette of the 'Little Mermaid.'
Day 12
Another day on which it's worth rising early to catch the last stages of 'Marco Polo"s passage back through the Kiel Canal to Brunsbuttel. The rest of the day is spent at sea, perhaps to relive the adventures of the holiday.
Day 13
'Marco Polo' arrives back in Tilbury, and you disembark and make your way home.
