A souvenir for life
Journey to western Norway's 'Fjord Country' - one of the world's most delightful destinations. Sheer mountainsides plunge into the deep, dark waters of the fjords, and, beyond, a hinterland of unspoilt forests, lakes and pristine glaciers is towered over by soaring peaks.
Single rooms are available for a supplement
Idyllic Balestrand lies on the sheltered north shore of mighty Sognefjord. In spring, the orchards surrounding the village - with its wooden church and neat cottages - are be-decked with blossom, while winter reigns in the mountains. In autumn, new snow adorns the peaks, while summer lingers by the fjord.
Outward travel from your selected airport to Norway, and onward transfer to your hotel.
Spend the day relaxing at the hotel or exploring the surrounding area. Our Tour Manager will be happy to suggest places to visit and things to do.
The Jostedal Glacier - mainland Europe's largest ice-flow - is a mesmerising natural wonder dominating the northern hinterland of the fjords. Our optional visit here is a great opportunity, both to see the glacier itself and to explore the informative Norwegian Glacier Museum.
A city of cobbled streets and medieval houses, Bergen is also the birthplace of composer Edvard Grieg. On our optional excursion, arriving by morning express boat, we'll visit the vibrant harbour and fish market, stroll past the wooden warehouses of Bryggen and take the Floibanen funicular up 'Mount' Floyen.
Spend today's optional excursion exploring beautiful Sognefjord and the fascinating Sognefjord Folk Museum at Kaupanger with its fine collection of jewellery, costumes, paintings and pottery, which reflects life through the ages in this beautiful corner of the world.
On our optional Norway In A Nutshell Tour we'll ride the world-famous Flamsbana branch line across the stunning scenery from Myrdal to Flam - a remarkable 20-kilometre descent down the steepsided valley - and take a two-hour cruise through spectacular Aurlandsfjord and Naeroyfjord to the port of Gudvangen.
Another day at leisure to enjoy the hotel and resort.
Transfer back to the airport for check-in and your flight home.
Specialities of the region include salmon - poached, smoked and marinated - pickled fish, smoked and cured meats, and local cheeses. The hotel's buffets include an extensive fresh-fruit and salad bar, hot and cold meat dishes and an excellent choice of fish, and the chef is very proud of his fresh desserts.
