Leaving the local area in the early morning we'll travel, through the picturesque villages and undulating hills of the Peak District, to our hotel, where we should arrive in good time to unpack and relax before dinner is served.
After breakfast we'll head to Carnforth Station, famous as the setting for David Lean's film 'Brief Encounter'. The station now includes an award-winning Visitor Centre with exhibitions that explore the making of the famous film, and the tea rooms have been restored to resemble the original film set.
After time to explore we'll board our train for the scenic journey around Morecambe Bay to Barrow-in-Furness. We'll pass through Leighton Moss Nature Reserve before continuing to Kent Viaduct, which boasts spectacular views across Morecambe Bay to Grange-over-Sands and the Lakeland Fells, over Leven Viaduct and through Ulverston and Dalton to Barrow-in-Furness. From here we'll re-board the coach and head to the charming Lakeland resort of Grange-over-Sands, with its traffic-free promenade and ornamental gardens.
We will return to the hotel in good time for dinner.
Today we head across country to catch the famous Settle to Carlisle railway. Our 72-mile journey takes us through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. You'll cross the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct and head through the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor before continuing, across the rolling hills of the Eden Valley, to the border city of Carlisle.
After the chance to have lunch we return to the hotel the beautiful Lake District. Our route will take us along the northern shores of majestic Ullswater, through the attractive village of Patterdale and over dramatic Kirkstone Pass. From here we'll continue, through wild and beautiful Troutbeck Valley, into Windermere, before heading east through Kendal and back to our hotel.
This morning we'll visit we'll visit the ever-popular Oswaldtwistle Mills. Explore its wild-fowl reserve and textile museum, and its enormous and fascinating range of retail outlets, and have lunch, before we begin our journey home in the early afternoon, arriving back in the local area by early to mid evening.
Due to railway timetabling and other issues beyond our control it may be necessary to swap Days Two and Three around.
